CHAPTER 63

International Right of Way Association (IRWA)

The International Right of Way Association (IRWA) is the only professional association that is the pre-eminent source of right of way educational and professional services worldwide. The IRWA comprises a dynamic global community of nearly 10,000 dedicated right of way professionals. It is a professional organization, specializing in education and professional development, which plays a significant role in the development of the economics of Canada and the United States. The aims and purpose of the association require a vigorous continuing education program, to better equip the right of way professionals so that they can fulfill their professional obligations.

The basic objectives for all Association chapters are as defined in the Articles of Incorporation:  "… to unite the efforts of all right of way practitioners toward a betterment of the conditions of the individual; to promote high standards and cooperative spirit among its members; to assist in creating a harmonious and friendly feeling between members and their respective employers; to engender in its members attributes which elevate the profession in which they are engaged and to provide mutual protection and advancement for the members...".

Who are IRWA members?

Are you involved in the acquisition, management or disposal of real property? Do you work for a government agency, public utility, pipeline company or right of way contractor? Are you an engineer, lawyer, appraiser, property manager or negotiator? Do you employ professionals working in relocation assistance, land title, property management or environmental areas?

If so, you can benefit from becoming a member of the International Right of Way Association, the premier organization serving the Right of Way profession.

IRWA serves a growing number of professionals. IRWA is an individual membership association with approximately 10,000 members throughout United States and Canada. Membership is comprised of engineers, appraisers, property managers, acquisition agents, lawyers, surveyors, title experts, environmentalists and relocation assistance agents.

While some members are in private practice, the majority of IRWA members are employed by national, provincial, state, county and city governmental agencies; special authorities including harbors, ports, water districts, airports and mass transit; utility, pipeline and telecommunications companies; and appraisal and right of way contracting companies.

 IRWA Core Values

  • We believe in professional development achieved through lifelong learning.

  • We believe in providing a community to people in the right of way industry that fosters excellence in professional growth and opportunities.

  • We believe in adherence to the highest standard of ethical practice.

  • We believe in providing quality services to all our stakeholders.

  • We believe in responsible stewardship of the Association’s financial resources.

IRWA mission statement

The purpose of the International Right of Way Association is to serve its members in developing and promoting programs and services that will enhance the members freedom and ability to conduct their individual businesses successfully with integrity, competency, and through collective action to promote and preserve the Right-of Way Profession.

IRWA vision statement

The International Right of Way Association will be the pre-eminent source of essential Right of Way professional development services and the association of choice for Right of Way Professionals committed to excellence.

The foundation strength and weakness of any organization rests with those individuals whose actions, decisions, and policies most directly influence the individual member. It is for this reason that the workings of the Chapters of the Association are the most important segment of the IRWA. It is in the personal relationships at the chapter level that the individual member will find incentives and opportunities for personal professional growth. It is primarily the chapter, through the development of its own objectives and goals, its educational efforts and general meeting programs, that maintains the individual member's interest and desire to participate in the Association's purposes and objectives.
